Georgia Military College Prep School is thrilled to announce that three of its exceptional teachers have been awarded Tri-County EMC Bright Ideas Grants for their innovative classroom projects. The program supports educators who inspire students through unique and creative teaching strategies and GMC Prep is absolutely brimming with them!
Brittany Nichols, GMC’s third-grade science teacher, received $1,500 to introduce a hydroponic tower garden to her classroom. With experience in hydroponics, she wanted her students to experience growing plants year-round, regardless of weather conditions. Students will also learn to monitor pH levels and practice responsibility through this project. “We’ll tie in farm-to-table activities, giving students a chance to cook with what they’ve grown,” she said, "this project not only teaches science, but also shows students where their food comes from."
First-year teacher Brittany Matthews brought home over $1,000 to introduce flexible seating options in her eighth-grade Georgia History classroom. FUN FACT: Matthews teaches in the largest classroom on GMC campus! She was inspired by her own high school experience and teacher training, to invest in alternative seating to create a more engaging and comfortable learning environment. “Students should feel excited to come into a classroom that works for them,” Matthews shared, "I wanted to move away from traditional desks and give my students the option to choose their seating to enhance their learning."
Fifth-grade math teacher Katrina Shy applied for the grant to align with Georgia’s updated math standards, which focus on hands-on learning. Her $730 grant will fund manipulatives such as fraction tiles, enabling students to explore math concepts visually and physically. “Manipulatives give students a chance to engage with math in ways that make it accessible for all learners, regardless of ability,” she explained.
We couldn't be more proud to have these wonderful innovative teachers cultivating the education of our young cadets. Congratulations to these and all of our teachers who have applied to grants this year! We look forward to seeing how these projects, and many more, contribute to the growth of our students.
